Star Wars and Things
So, yeah, I saw Star Wars last night at the midnight show, and then went to the diner, and I am at work this morning. I estimate I am operating on about three hours sleep. (Got in just a hair before 5am, set alarm for 8am, left house 8:25am, not half bad, hey?). If the day really drags, I'll go home "sick" at noon. I do have a cough and there is a flu hitting the department hard, so I should be able to pull it off. Is today a break from the caffeine-free lifestyle day? Oh, yes!
I rather enjoyed it. The plot-free slapstick level was much lower than I and II, which helped a lot, and, as expected, much pretty scenery and fight scenes. The one thing that nearly killed it for me was Padme's death scene. For crying out loud! She died of a broken heart? A broken heart!?!?! For one thing, you don't just get depressed and keel over dead. And even if you try to pull the "Oh, woe is me, I have nothing to live for" - hello, the babies aren't something to live for? I would have been fine if Palpatine had been poisoning her or something (to ensure the bad future visions), or she died of complications of having been nearly strangled to death, but they made a huge point of saying "there's nothing physically wrong with her, she's just lost the will to live." I wanted to throw popcorn at the screen. This kick-ass woman is supposed to have just keeled over from a broken heart - what an incredible insult to womankind everywhere!
In other news, I may have found my missing titanium hairstick, but I will not know for sure until I get home. Since I was not carrying the single stick in my purse, I need to check my dresser to make sure I did not just find the same one over again.
As far as future movie nights go, there will be a Friday, June 17 expedition to see the Batman movie. There will also be a dinner of some kind (either before or after) because that's my birthday.
Er, no
It's less the realism thing (because in a world with the Force, I could be convinced to buy someone willing themselves to death), and more the undercurrent of "a woman with no man has no reason to live". Yes, it was a heartbreaking betrayal, but it basically says that all of Padme's strength and prior achievements meant nothing. You know, a woman can only be kick-ass until she gets a man, at which point her only value is as an adjunct to him. It offends my feminist soul.

And yeah, annoying as hell. I'm glad I know about this bit already so I won't choke on my popcorn.

A-freakin'-men!
God, I hate how male writers think women will just collapse and die if their lives get too sad. HELLO! Even poorly adjusted and not-especially-tough ordinary housewives survive being attacked by their husbands and find it within themselves to stay alive and take care of their own children. Padme was a strong, competent, tough woman, and I'm very annoyed that she met her end in this wussy Victorian-romance-novel fashion.
I don't like the idea of her committing suicide in the first place, but if Lucas really HAD to go that route, he should at LEAST have allowed her the proactivity of shooting herself in the head with a blaster, rather than just bloodlessly and blamelessly expiring of loneliness. I am so, so tired of how men in popular fiction always have control over their own fate whereas women are constantly adrift in a sea of other people's whims.
Yoda tells Aniking to pull back from caring overly much, he tries, it feels wrong.
Palpatine talks about his secret cure and explains that the secret is to join closer: that you can establish a connection through the force (of course a connection that feeds life power is unnatural and is a dark side thing)
Anikin begins his trip down the darkside by establishing this life force link with Padme
Later, clinging deseprately to life, beliveing that Both Obi Wan and Padme have betrayed him, the emperor shows up and urges/cajoles Anikin to use the link he's established, not to help Padme, but to help himself, ideally so that he may live, live for revenge on the jedi.
Drawing on this link sends Padme into a mysery illness. She beings dying. They begine extracting the children becuase they can and help her recover as best as possible. Later, as the driods begin applying the cybernetics, The Emperor instructs the Droids to not sedate Anikin. They warn him that doing so could send him into shock and kill him, but the emperor say that his hatred will sustian him and makes them press on.
Meanwhile the kids have been delivered, Padme wants to hold them, the med droid gives her Lea, but she's too weak to hold Lke who stays with Obi-wan. Padme gets to express her sorrow about everything to Lea (who remebered her mother in RotJ) while the driods begin Vaderizing Anikin. As Anikin is transformed, Padme goes into convulsions and dies, drained by Anikin.
Return to our story already in progress.
IMHO, that would have been _much_better. Cut the entire wookie scenes if it's felt that this lengthens the movie overly much.
Pay Close Attention
He attacked her life force. He attacked her life force. She gave whatever she had left to the babies. He attacked her life force...
Re: Pay Close Attention
Now that I think of it...
Danger! Danger Wil Robinson! Danger! Estrogen levels in thread too high. Fleeeeeeeee!
Estrogen levels may have had something to do with it
The movie was fine. For all it was sold out, there were a couple of empty rows at the front. Either they kpet tickets in reserve or opened another theater at the last minute.
